Why make a Google font finder?
When Google Fonts first launched it only had 19 fonts. Today it has over 1900 font familes. Finding the right one is basically impossible.
Also, as a designer on a budget, I pretty much only use Google Fonts. They're free, easy to implement, and work everywhere. But whenever I'd search for a "Google Font alternative to _____," I'd end up browsing the same design blogs and Reddit threads, seeing the same old suggestions.
And the font identifier sites out there mostly push premium commercial fonts — none of them focus exclusively on open source / free / Google Fonts.
So I made this. Also I also recently added a pick-any-google-font feature to my TaperCraft website for making CD's, Cassettes and VHS and DVD covers and more. And I realized that I needed a way to identify Google fonts.
Remember when What the Font was good?
When "What the Font?" first came out, it was amazing. But its gotten worse and worse.
There are new sites, but I find all the font finding sites to have stressful interfaces. So I wanted to make something nice, with some improvements. Like being able to paste images from your clipboard, faster loading, and showing more results. Also each result has a direct download button, a button to copy the font's name and other QoL fixes that others don't seem to have.
And if the font you're searching doesn't exist as a Google Font, this website will find a bunch that look close enough. So this is a great tool for finding similar Google fonts as well. I built it for myself, and it was super useful for me, so hopefully it's useful to you too.
Pro Tips
- Use a clean, clear screenshot of the font you're trying to identify. Noisy or angled images make the results worse.
- Paste images directly with Cmd + V (or Ctrl + V on PC).
